About

Rentang Art Lab

RENTANG is Surabaya’s first initiative dedicated specifically to international contemporary art residency.

Situated in a historic port–industrial city shaped by movement, labor, and layered histories, RENTANG positions residency not as a retreat, but as an immersive process of living, researching, and creating within the city’s social and material realities. We function as a conceptual home, a space for dialogue, exchange, and artistic experimentation across cultures.

We approach residency as:

• Process, not product
• Exchange, not extraction
• Context-driven practice
• Curatorial dialogue
• Long-term relational network

Danny Hartanto Kristiawan DIRECTOR

Danny Hartanto Kristiawan is a designer, maker, and curator who works across disciplines such as art, design communication, and marketing. Since 2018, Danny has actively engaged in the twists and turns of the Surabaya creative arts industry through several organizations and businesses. One of the ideas that started his journey was the awareness of alternative art spaces in Surabaya. Filling the shortage of art space and driven by his conviction in the city’s potential, Danny founded Keliling Art Space, a nomadic art space in Surabaya.

At the end of 2020, Danny has involved in developing and setting up the initial ecosystem as Creative Director at Unicorn Creative Space, an interdisciplinary creative space located in an industrial area in South Surabaya. Now he is in charge as Artistic Director at Orasis Art Space, a newly refurbished gallery and host to seminal programs and activities related to the arts and culture such as Surabaya Art Prize and KineKini Moving Image Festival.

He has taken part in several cultural programs, including CULTIVATE: Programming in the Arts by the In-tangible Institute & Bangkok Art and Culture Center as a participant; 2026 Workshops for Arts Professionals by Para Site Hong Kong as a participant; the public discussion Pasar Seni Rupa Kontemporer Indonesia: Potensi dan Problematika at ARTSUBS: Material Ways as a moderator; and the Peruvian Film Screening by the Embassy of Peru in Indonesia as a curator.

Dimas Tri Pamungkas CURATOR

Dimas Tri Pamungkas was born on September 23, 1994, in Jombang Regency, East Java. He is known as a curator, writer, and researcher in critical cultural studies, employing a multidisciplinary approach that connects art, philosophy, and social theory. Since 2019, he has been active at Studio Barisan in Yogyakarta, while in 2017 he founded Eigen Media in Jakarta as an alternative platform for art and philosophy. In 2021, he served as a curator for Biennale Jatim IX, and currently co-founded and manages Pranala Institute in Surabaya, an interdisciplinary learning space focused on the development of critical knowledge.

In his practice, Dimas positions art as a medium for examining and unpacking social structures shaped by ideology and the normalization of everyday life. His realist approach does not merely represent reality, but traces how reality itself is produced through relations of power. Aesthetics, therefore, is understood as a space for critique that reveals what remains hidden, creates a reflective distance from reality, and opens possibilities for critical consciousness. Rather than offering certainty, his work seeks to question and disrupt established orders, positioning art as a field of symbolic resistance as well as a space for reimagining social life.

Dwiki Nugroho Mukti PROGRAM LEAD

Dwiki Nugroho Mukti is an artist and curator based in Gresik, Indonesia. The themes frequently addressed in his works and activities revolve around the environment, education, and rural communities. In his artistic practice, recycled media are often used as a statement regarding things that have been forgotten and marginalized.

Dwiki manages an alternative space called “Menganti Huis” as a meeting point between art and the local community. He served as the director of the East Java Biennale Foundation from 2019 to 2023, is an editor for MAOSZINE, founder of ARSUB (a fine art archiving initiative based in Surabaya), founder of SARCAST (a syndicate art collective and alternative space), and a member of Lumbung Indonesia. Currently, he is affiliated with the ASRI collective and Serbuk Kayu.

His published books include Buku Program 2016 / SANDIOLO, a map of East Java’s art collectives titled Timur Liar, and Surabaya Emerging Artist. Some of his notable projects include Urban Pin International, the Indonesian Education Exhibition “Simpul Seru”, and Mengingat 25 tahun Reformasi (Remembering 25 Years of Reform).

Aulia Pertiwihayu RESIDENCY ASSISTANT

Aulia Pertiwihayu is a designer and artist based in Surabaya. With a background in fine art, she has developed a practice that brings together art, design, illustration, and visual storytelling. Her practice encompasses illustration, editorial design, cover design, web design, and product development. She has also participated in Refresh Art Exhibition at Visma Coffee & Co., Sidoarjo (2023), which brought together the works of 25 young artists from Surabaya and its surrounding areas.

Alongside her visual practice, Aulia writes through LILOKLILI, a platform through which she explores art, design, popular culture, and the broader art ecosystem. Her writings have addressed exhibition-making, hospitality in the arts, and zines, reflecting her interest in how art is produced, presented, and experienced by the public. Through these intersecting practices, Aulia continues to explore the relationship between artistic expression, design, and everyday experience.

Iklas Bakhtiar INTERN

Iklas Baktiar is a curator, writer, and cultural practitioner based in East Java. Currently studying Fine Art at Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA), his practice focuses on curatorial research, contemporary art, and the development of local art ecosystems. His interests extend to questions surrounding access, community, and the relationship between art and everyday social realities, particularly within emerging art scenes outside established cultural centers. Alongside his curatorial practice, he actively writes and documents his observations of the development of art and cultural networks in East Java.

His curatorial practice has included Puspawarna 4: Imagoria (2026), an annual art exhibition in Sidoarjo, where he developed the curatorial framework around children’s imagination and their everyday experiences. His approach involved not only selecting and presenting artworks, but also conducting research and engaging directly with students, teachers, and the wider community throughout the process. Through these practices, Iklas positions curating as a form of facilitation—creating connections between artists, audiences, and their social contexts while opening space for new perspectives within the local art ecosystem.
