Kexin Hong is a Chinese multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker based in the Netherlands. Her work sits at the intersection of collective memory and transgenerational trauma, transposing psychological methods such as Imagery Rescripting into visual practice to explore how imagination and symbolic imagery might reenact and reclaim what history has erased, and what it continues to haunt.

Her work has been presented at W139 Amsterdam, LAB111 Amsterdam, Felix Meritis, Dutch Design Week, ZK/U Berlin, and the 2025 Asia Triennial in Manchester. She has collaborated with scholars, psychotherapists specializing in intergenerational trauma, and diaspora communities across the Netherlands. In 2025, Kexin organized a screening program at ZK/U Berlin that centered on migrant artists. She is also the founder of Echoes from Afar, an Asian online diaspora living archive website. 

Her practice has received sustained institutional backing, including support from the Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst (2024), the Creative Industries Fund NL (2025), the Crazy Peach Art Foundation (Top Grant Recipient, 2025), and the Mondriaan Fund (2026).

In Between Silence, Kexin Hong opens her artistic research as a journey through memories fractured by the history of 1965, a history that left behind not only an archive of violence, but also diaspora, loss, and intergenerational silence. Kexin’s longstanding relationship with Tiong Ang, who has also lived in the Netherlands for many years, became the starting point for a search that eventually brought Kexin back to Surabaya, Tiong’s place of origin. From hospitals and Chinese cemeteries to encounters with surviving relatives and landscapes beyond Java, Kexin traces remnants that no longer exist as a complete story, but persist through fragments of bodies, places, sounds, images, and memories.

Through a subliminal approach, she does not force history to speak, but listens to its faltering pulse, between what has been inherited, concealed, and lost. Film becomes a way of approaching the absence of the past, not to restore it, but to sense its traces. The audience will witness how the research unfolds and transforms into film, while Tiong Ang joins the conversation online, bringing his own memories and experiences into the encounter.
Between distance, images, sounds, and silence, Between Silence reopens a question: how does a fractured history continue to live within the bodies and memories of those it left behind?
